USCG + Food Network= Wonky TV with Coasties involved
Posted by Joe Coastie

USCGC TANEY.jpg
From jawsh1971
First off the word wonky is a real word, go here to see for yourself. The Food Network must of had a recent running of their show The Next Food Network Star which took place on an un-named Coast Guard Cutter. The blog MinxEats has the breakdown of the episode and has a few screen shots (removed; see here for pic originally with this post.). Not a lot of Coast Guard related items in here, but none the less, it did have real Coasties involved... and that's what we like to see.

From said blog
The Wannabes get some time to prep at the Food Network Kitchens, but must then take the food on board a Coast Guard ship and present it to thirty hungry Coast Guard men and women. Again with the copycat Top Chef-type challenge.
And though "[the] halibut was overcooked..." I'm pretty sure out Coasties weren't too picky.

Let us know if you know who that Coastie in the picture at this site is, and what Cutter this was filmed on. Bon Appetit!

The unofficial/official USCG Twitter page
Posted by Ryan R. Erickson

I must profess my love for Twitter! It's amazing how quickly one can get hooked on a new thing... I have found a new obsession, and with that come a responsibility to put such an obsession to good use (thank God I don't gamble). I mentioned last week that I created a Twitter account for CGBlog to keep us Twitterrrrs (?) up to date on new posts and information- today I would like to take it a step further. I would like to bring your attention to a new account I created for the avid fan of our small little service: Twitter.com/USCG. The USCG account is a RSS repeater of all the USCG's official RSS feeds; CGMS, Press Releases, Updates. Note that this is an unofficial account as the USCG wouldn't be expected to use something like this, it's to "off the shelf." I hope you like it, and if you have any suggestions please let us know.

Oh, and before I go I would also like to point our Twitter friends to the official Twitter world of Coast Guard News (Twitter.com/CoastGuardNews).

Twitter & RSS + CGBlog= Greatness!
Posted by Ryan R. Erickson

The continuation of upkeep and additions to the site have become something of a thing for me. And as such I am announcing two new tabs up there on the upper right-hand corner. The first is the RSS tab, RSS stand for Really Simple Syndication. Most of you already know we have been touting RSS for awhile, there are links all over the site, and most browsers tell you already that there is an RSS feed up there in your address bar. However, there are always those of you out there who are a little timid in the world of the web, and for you I invite you to learn how to use RSS by checking out this great piece on exactly what it is, and how to use it from our friends at Google.

The second tab is the Twitter tab. The short version of what Twitter is, directly from the Twitter site:

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?
Well ain't that special- but how are we at CGBlog using it? Well first, twitter has been around for quite some time, I've had an account for about a year (twitter.com/ryanerickson) but only recently started using it again. It's primarily used to keep your 'friends' and 'followers' up to date on what your doing from going to dinner to the show your watching... So back to how CGBlog is using it; we are using this tool as a means to keep you, our readers, up to date on new post from this blog as well as any breaking news having to do with the Coast Guard by way of the internet, your phone (text messaging), or a desktop chat client.

How do get started? First you should know, it's FREE! Just head on over to Twitter.com sign up and start tittering! Its best if you have a text messaging plan, but as mentioned above you can do it from their web page or a downloadable desktop client. That was easy!

After you get your account going, head on over to Twitter.com/cgblog and follow us. Why your at it you can look up to see if your friends are there too.

Feel free to ask away with any questions.

My how the Coast Guard has changed
Posted by Joe Coastie

And no this is not the perspective of this Coastie... I don't think I've been in long enough. The title is that of a photo I came across when viewing my RSS feeds this afternoon- found on Flickr from user vector1771. No I'm not doing my own "photo spotlight" here, but I did want to bring to the attention of all of our readers out there this great shot of what appears to be, to me at least, an MSST gunny on the bow of the 25767. Though the fact that this Coastie isn't wearing a "high-speed" tactical drysuit also suggests it may be a Station asset. Great shot! This should be a motivational poster... or at the very least a cool caption: "Coast Guard, not just a job, but a life." Ok, that was bad, but hey... I'm not an advertising guru!

CGBlog Twitter

You got here directly or by clicking the Twitter tab- Congrats... you won! So what is Twitter? The short version of what Twitter is, directly from the Twitter site:

After you get your account going we recommend 'following' two profiles:
  • CGBlog: This will keep you updated to the An Unofficial Coast Guard Blog posting and any other news that may be noteworthy.
  • USCG: This will keep you up to date on releases put out by Official Coast Guard sources such as CGMS Messages and press releases.
Also be sure to check and see if you can find any of you friends... I'm on there!

Feel free to ask away with any questions.

D13 Podcast Gets A Makeover
Posted by John Willis

The 13th Coast Guard District Public Affairs podcast is getting a makeover.

It looks to me like they have decided to step things up a notch in their video production. Here's the new opening sequence.

Coast Guard gets Lost
Posted by Joe Coastie

Here is the time I profess my geekness for those thing that most would find geeky. Today I found a Coast Guard reference in an unexpected place... on a blog that is all things Lost (DarkUFO). You know, that awesome show on ABC. Anyhow, our CG reference...

US Coast Guard in Lost Finale
I'm pretty sure this is true but until I get confirmation I'll leave in rumors.
  • The Lost Crew were at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point in Hawaii
  • They spent a day filming various Coast Guard aircraft taxing and performing low level fly by's
  • Lots of "Coasties" were used as Extras.
And for you who care: What is the picture of in this post? First one to get it right gets an adaboy attaboy!
