Breaking News: U.S. Tracking North Korean Vessel

Fox News just broke that a “senior U.S. official” has confirmed the U.S. is tracking a North Korean vessel named “Kang Nam”.  The vessel left a North Korean port on Wednesday, and is suspected of transporting “weaponry, missile parts or nuclear materials”.
This raises a whole variety of response issues given that the United Nations resolution [...]

Is this a step backward? Coast Guard’s new social media tools identified

Earlier this week, I had a couple of unanswered questions for Admiral Allen concerning the way ahead with social media. They were somewhat specific, technically, in nature, and Admiral Allen has provided answers.
Q. Could you comment on the use of Intelink-U internally within the Coast Guard for social media and collaborative tools.
A. Intelink-U is [...]

Coast Guard Innovation Expo: Evangelizing Intelink-U

Each year, the Coast Guard hosts a Coast Guard Innovation Expo. The Expo is part trade show, part Coasties showing off cool stuff, and part professional development.

Coast Guard personnel can host a spot on the Expo floor to show off and talk about innovations they’ve developed or use. We’ve had things like home-grown data base [...]

Are we engaged, or not? Anyone headed to the GEOINT Maritime Communityof Practice Conference?

From shubhangi athalye
I stumbled across an announcement for the first annual Maritime Community of Practice Conference (enabling communication and collaboration) being held at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) in Bethesda on 10-11 September. What’s the conference about? “Anything to do with maritime.” Okay, that’s pretty broad; note that the conference is being [...]

Intelink story on the radio

Still wondering what the Intelink-U thing is?  This might help.  Chris Rasmussen was on a talk show recently.  As he noted yesterday in his Need-To-Share Guy blog:
I was on Federal News Radio AM 1050 Government IT Solutions Spotlight this morning talking about gardening, lessons learned, and next steps.

Intel & Ops – Can’t They Just Get Along..?

I’ve been watching the dialogue wrt Intelink and other collaborative technologies, along with the discussions concerning KM, open sharing, stovepipes within Government, yada, yada, yada…
The reality is, operations are far more effective with “good Intelligence”. Intel has no real purpose in life without “Operators” – it seems to me that several years ago, in [...]

Open Source Conference open to Coasties (and others)

The use of Intelink as a set of tools for Coasties to do their jobs better and increase organizational performance seems to be taking off.  In the last day, two senior officers have contacted me requesting coaching on how to use the tools within their respective organizations.  More on those questions to follow in another [...]

Using the tools provided: Collaboration and information sharing on Intelink #5

Here’s a little skit to put things into perspective. My thanks to Chris Rasmussen for allowing me to adapt his work (which he adapted from someone else’s work… which seems to be the nature of the Internet).

A skit about the conflict between the old and the new.

Using the tools provided: Collaboration and information sharing on Intelink #4

In response to yesterday’s post about Intelink, Anonymous commented,
First of all, I think that the Coast Guard and other agencies must make a genuine and widespread attempt to encourage the use of Intelink. Further, it should not be limited to Intelligence. I can think of many uses of this type of technology by our human [...]

Using the tools provided: Collaboration and information sharing on Intelink #3

Admiral Allen has suggested that perhaps wikis can be used to help develop policy.  Indeed they can as evidenced with this Intellipedia page, The CJCSI 6212 Revision Portal.

Perhaps that’s a bit much for you? Try this more humble attempt, Coast Guard policy encouraging use of external social network Sites.
So, how will use Intelink and the [...]
