Why CNN failed its own test of legitimacy

One of our contributors, Anastacia, sent this my way and I thought I’d get it out to you if you’ve not found it already. The site, The Line of Departure, has a good piece titled The Rush To Be Wrong on the potential of what went wrong with CNN on the day of their erroneous [...]

Because it’s digital we can watch it over and over…

In the interest of reliving my day in the command center on Friday (11 September 2009) I thought I’d post the press conference with VADM Currier, Coast Guard Chief of Staff (I liked him when he was in D13… and I like him even more now). This of course was in response to the ill-reported [...]

The Coast Guard Drill, CNN, and US Code

Alright, so by now everyone has heard of the whole 9/11 drill debacle. There is a lot of finger pointing going on as to who is at fault for yesterdays panic.
I have heard good arguments for where the Coast Guard could have done differently and I have heard a lot of interesting discussion on where [...]

The Brand of “We” Versus the Brand of “Me”

Why should each of us care about a cohesive, consistent brand and communications strategy for the Coast Guard?

Coast Guard’s “Zero Tolerance” Drug Policy at work

The local New London, CT paper The Day has a piece on the expulsion of nine Coast Guard cadets after they were found to have been using or possessing cocaine or marijuana. The article notes-

All nine of the third-class cadets will receive general discharges and will be barred from ever returning to academy grounds, the [...]

US Coast Guard Cutter STORIS- the Museum?

This was passed my way about a week ago but it slipped through the cracks of life and was making its way to the bottom of my email before I dove in an plucked ‘er out. Sound’s a lot better than saying I clicked on it.
A fellow reader of our little Coast Guard world sent [...]

USMC bans social media; could it happen for all?

The battle between the use of social networking tools and the military is really starting to heat up. Last week, while I was on my little hiatus, Peter posted a Danger Room story on the Pentagon looking into an all out ban on the use of social media tools/sites such as Twitter and Facebook, among [...]

R.I.P. Guardian Walter Cronkite

Walter Cronkite, who passed away yesterday at the ripe age of 92, has been a man of pivotal, world-shaping stories through at least two generations of Americans.  But there are stories of Mr. Cronkite himself that are far less often told.
Among those stories are fascinating accounts of his own rescue on the high seas–in fact, [...]

Swine Flu Plagues the Air Force Academy

I realize it’s not the Coast Guard Academy but when reading the story on CNN it struck me that it could easily happen. CNN states-
Sixty-seven cadets at the Air Force Academy have confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza — the so-called swine flu — and another 30 are showing symptoms of the highly contagious virus, the [...]

Coast Guardsman drowns over the weekend

It’s with regret that I inform you that on Saturday we, and in Coast Guardsmen, lost one of our own. Petty Officer First Class Sefton Reid, stationed in Ketchikan, AK, drowned while on a fishing trip in Alaskan waters. Our prayers are with his family; he leaves behind four children.
