The site, The Line of Departure, has a good piece titled The Rush To Be Wrong on the potential of what went wrong with CNN on the day of their erroneous [...] In the interest of reliving my day in the command center on Friday (11 September 2009) I thought I’d post the press conference with VADM Currier, Coast Guard Chief of Staff (I liked him when he was in D13… and I like him even more now). This of course was in response to the ill-reported [...] Alright, so by now everyone has heard of the whole 9/11 drill debacle. There is a lot of finger pointing going on as to who is at fault for yesterdays panic. The local New London, CT paper The Day has a piece on the expulsion of nine Coast Guard cadets after they were found to have been using or possessing cocaine or marijuana. The article notes- All nine of the third-class cadets will receive general discharges and will be barred from ever returning to academy grounds, the [...] This was passed my way about a week ago but it slipped through the cracks of life and was making its way to the bottom of my email before I dove in an plucked ‘er out. Sound’s a lot better than saying I clicked on it. Walter Cronkite, who passed away yesterday at the ripe age of 92, has been a man of pivotal, world-shaping stories through at least two generations of Americans. But there are stories of Mr. Cronkite himself that are far less often told. I realize it’s not the Coast Guard Academy but when reading the story on CNN it struck me that it could easily happen. CNN states- It’s with regret that I inform you that on Saturday we, and in Coast Guardsmen, lost one of our own. Petty Officer First Class Sefton Reid, stationed in Ketchikan, AK, drowned while on a fishing trip in Alaskan waters. Our prayers are with his family; he leaves behind four children. |
