Some Coast Guard Mascots… oh so creepy

Though there is something historical to be said about embarking your favorite animal to be your sidekick for a seagoing adventure, there is something completely different to be said for a few select Coast Guard animal-ish mascots; and that word would be creepy. I found these via various websites all of which should have their own links. Follow along for a slightly creepy Friday adventure of animal and oversized human mascots… If you have more let us know… we’d love to see ‘em.

I've had beef with PFD Panda for years now. What in the hell does a panda have to do with boating safety? And the thing that really gets me steamed is that we take a US service and outsource the mascot from China. At least the brown bear plays in shallow water, but the Panda......Oh I hate that panda.

You may want to do some research on "furry conventions," seems like you guys may be headed in that direction. Not sure it fits in with Core Values
  • Ok TJ, either I'm tired or I missed something?

    Ryan,

If you Google "furry convention," you find an underworld of adults who dress up in furry mascot costumes and basically engage in strange fetish activities. Seeing that many people dressed up like animals reminded me of my run with hundreds of them in Pittsburgh last year. My hotel for a business trip to Pittsburgh turned out to be the host of a furry event. When the bartender tried to explain furries to me I thought she was crazy. A Google revealed she was not.
  • Ahh... I saw that on an episode of CSI a few years ago... that is a
very creepy (in keeping with the post) "fetish." But, to each their
    own.
  • :-P
I googled it because I was trying to figure what you were talking about. My search revealed that a common misconception or furry conventions is that they engage in fetish activities. So let's not be prejudiced and spread a bunch of rumors about people who like to wear strange animal costumes. I may not understand it but it doesn't mean they're a bunch of sexual deviants.

On a side note - that Joe Coastie costume is possibly the most uncomfortable and hot thing I have ever worn. Kids don't even like it... they get scared and start crying. I say we stick with Donald Duck... the original Coast Guard character.
  • That is an odd costume to see, even from a parents perspective.

I had to be Wally Wise the Chemical Safety Turtle (see http://www.playmakers.net/media/user/Image/Wall... for an example) when I worked for the county emergency management agency. Boy that suit got hot and I couldn't see a darn thing. Somebody had to lead me around to keep me from walking into walls and small children.

Does it seem like we have a bit of an identity crisis here? I understand that the different mascots promote different things (Officer Snook is against water pollution, Sammy, who I think is actually sort of cute, wants you to wear a life jacket, etc), but maybe we should be doing more of the Smokey Bear thing. Every kid knows Smokey Bear. It would be great if the Coast Guard had Smokey-like recognition for their mascot, but I think that would be very hard with the current plethora of mascots. We've got Coastie the talking boat too.
